Moving Taiwan’s Capital South

In a “Speaking Freely” guest column in Asia Times Online, Dr. Winston Wong makes the case for moving Taiwan’s capital from Taipei to a city in the south. Citing safety, security and environmental reasons, as well as international precedents, Dr. Wong says that moving the capital is not only doable, but an imperative – arguing, among other things, that such a move would rectify the long-standing economic and political imbalance between Taiwan’s North and South. He calls on President Ma to “name an elite national panel, chaired by a member of his new cabinet, to study the idea.”
